Nina-Simone Kellman is a queer Trini-Canadian artist from Anishinabeg [Newcastle, ON] currently based in Kjipuktuk [Halifax, NS] recently graduated with a BFA from NSCAD. Within their work they explore themes of surrealism, perversion, shame and desire. Pulling inspiration from obscure online communities, they replicate their experiences of unlimited internet access from a young age while also extracting imagery from vintage wrestling magazines & other eclectic paraphernalia. Their painting practice is reliant on depictions of consent and voyeurism through forms of performance, including mud wrestling, traditional boxing, or porn. Kellman asks: “Who is allowed to be seen, and in which spaces are they allowed to look?”
